Internet Pioneers Lecture at IIa-Sponsored EventAfter postponements caused by Hurricane Isabel and January ice storms, the long-awaited lecture by Internet pioneers Dr. Vint Cerf and Dr. Bob Kahn was held in June (see photos). The program was orginially scheduled in September 2003 as part of IIa's year-long 15th anniversary celebration. The lecture was video taped by the University of Tennessee. They will be making the files of the lecture available to us to stream from the IIa website in early September. IIa SLA Donation Honors StaffOver the summer, IIa put its money to work in support of the profession on which the company is based--library and information science. The Special Libraries Association’s (SLA) in June announced their Annual Campaign for Professional Development to rasie $1M to create a professional development center. Because IIa recognizes and supports the importance of professional development for librarians and information scientists, the company donated $3,276, or $84 for each of its 39 employees who hold masters degrees in library and information science (SLA had challenged each of its individual members to donate $84). In the August edition of SLA's Information Outlook magazine, Executive Director Janice R. Lachance noted IIa's contribution in her Executive "Outlook" column. "Just a few weeks ago, Information International Associates of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, pledged US$ 84.00 for each of the 39 information professionals on their staff, a total of US$ 3,276.00! I've been in touch with Bonnie Carroll, the CEO of the company, and she agreed to issue a challenge to other information professional employers, through a press announcement from SLA. How's that for imagination in action?" Knox College scholarship
IIa President Bonnie Carroll said, “...with this scholarship money, IIa hopes to encourage and support Knoxville College students to continue their education and enter graduate programs in the diverse and dynamic information field in which we work.” In accepting the scholarship donation, Dr. Hatton thanked IIa for being a partner to help Knoxville College achieve its mission to provide “a challenging and stimulating educational experience for students who have demonstrated academic ability...” UT School of Information Science ScholarshipIn April 2004, IIa awarded the first of its planned annual scholarships for the University of Tennessee's School of Information Science. The scholarship goes to either a student who shows unusual promise as a leader, and intends to pursue a career that encompasses research, innovation, and creativity in the fields of information science and information technology. The first award was made in April 2004 to Beverly Simmons.
