Gail Hodge, Senior Information Scientist

Gail Hodge has been involved in the information industry since 1978. She joined IIa in March 1996, with primary responsibility for project management and consulting in the areas of database production, taxonomy and vocabulary development, metadata and related standards, and the application of technology to scientific and technical information management.

Recent projects include an automatic classification project for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Library; consulting to the National Technical Information Service on persistent digital identifiers; development of specialized vocabularies for the National Agricultural Library, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the National Institute for Literacy; the development of a interagency e-print service for EPA and DOE's Environmental Management Science Program; a study on the state of digital preservation for the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI); and strategic planning and standards monitoring for the International Standard Serial Number International Center. Ms. Hodge serves as the Operations Manager for CENDI, an interagency working group of senior scientific and technical information managers in the federal government. She coordinates the operations of the CENDI working groups in the areas of Content Management, IT Security, and Education. She has been involved in the development of Science.gov , an interagency gateway to public scientific and technical information from the U.S. federal government.

Prior to joining IIa, Ms. Hodge was Director of Operations and Analysis for RMS Associates, contractor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Center for AeroSpace Information. She led the Center's effort to replace the RECON text-retrieval system and redesign and to convert its database.

From 1978-1993, Ms. Hodge was employed by BIOSIS in various capacities, including Department Head for Research and Development from 1985-1991, with responsibility for production system development. As Systems Administrator (1992-May 1993) she was responsible for the logical design phase of BIOSIS' new production system for its abstracting and indexing products.

Ms. Hodge has published and presented papers nationally and internationally on a variety of topics, including automatic indexing, project management for database production, systems reengineering, and digital preservation. She is currently preparing lectures for NATO on digital preservation and cataloging and indexing in the Internet environment to be presented in Lithuania and Slovakia.

Ms. Hodge is a member of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST), where she has served as both chair and program chair for the Information Policy Special Interest Group. She serves on the Executive Committee of the ASIST Delaware Valley Chapter. She is also a member of the National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services (NFAIS) Information Policy Committee. She has developed numerous conferences and programs on a variety of topics from digital archiving to copyright and electronic publishing.

Ms. Hodge has a Masters of Library and Information Science from Drexel University.
